To find out prognostic factors and to investigate different therapeutic approaches, we report on 147 consecutive patients who relapsed after allogeneic hematopoietic stem cell transplantation (allo-HSCT) for myelodysplastic syndrome (MDS). Sixty-two patients underwent immunotherapy (IT group, second allo-HSCT or donor lymphocyte infusion), 39 received cytoreductive treatment alone (CRT group) and 46 were managed with palliative/supportive cares (PSC group). Two-year rates of overall survival (OS) were 32%, 6%, and 2% in the IT, CRT, and PSC groups, respectively (P < .001). In multivariate analysis, 4 factors adversely influenced 2-year rates of OS: history of acute graft-versus-host disease (hazard ratio [HR], 1.83; 95% confidence interval [CI], 1.26 to 2.67; P ¼ .002), relapse within 6 months (HR, 2.69; 95% CI, .82 to 3.98; P < .001), progression to acute myeloid leukemia (HR, 2.59; 95% CI, 1.75 to 3.83; P < .001), and platelet count < 50 G/L at relapse (HR, 1.68; 95% CI, 1.15 to 2.44; P ¼.007). A prognostic score based on those factors discriminated 2 risk groups with median OSs of 13.2 versus 2.4 months, respectively (P < .001). When propensity score, prognostic score, and treatment strategy were included in Cox model, immunotherapy was found to be an independent factor that favorably impacts OS (HR, .40; 95% CI, .26 to .63; P < .001). In conclusion, immunotherapy should be considered when possible for MDS patients relapsing after allo-HSCT

Outcome of Ph negative myeloproliferative neoplasms transforming to accelerated or leukemic phase

    Get PDF
Myeloproliferative neoplasms (MPN) are chronic disorders that can sometimes evolve into accelerated or leukemic phases. We retrospectively identified 122 patients with such blastic phases. The overall median survival was four months: 10.2 months for patients treated with intensive treatments compared to three months for best supportive care (p = .005). Azacytidine, intensive chemotherapies, or allogeneic stem cell transplantation gave the highest median survivals with 9, 10.2, and 19.4 months, respectively. Accelerated phases (AP) had a longer median survival compared to acute leukemia (4.8 months vs. 3.1 months; p = .02). In this retrospective and observational study, we observe that the longest survivals are seen in patients eligible for intensive treatments. Azacytidine shows interesting results in patients non-fit for intensive chemotherapy. Supportive care should probably be restricted to elderly patients and those with unfavorable karyotype. An early diagnosis of AP could also result in a better survival rate

A Potassium Metal-Organic Framework based on Perylene- 3,4,9,10-tetracarboxylate as Sensing Layer for Humidity Actuators

We have synthesized a novel three-dimensional metal-organic-framework (MOF) based on the perylene-3,4,9,10-tetracarboxylate linker and potassium as metallic centre. We report the formation of this K-based MOF using conventional routes with water as solvent. This material displays intense green photoluminescence at room temperature, and displays an aggregation dependent quenching. Correlation of the optical properties with the crystalline packing was confirmed by DFT calculations. We also demonstrate its potential to build humidity actuators with a reversible and reproducible response, with a change of 5 orders of magnitudes in its impedance at about 40% relative humidity (RH). This 3D-MOF is based on an interesting perylene derivative octadentate ligand, a moiety with interesting fluorescent properties and known component in organic semiconductors. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first time to build such a printed and flexible actuator towards humidity with a reversible response, enabling precise humidity threshold monitoring. This work was supported by the Junta de Andalucía (FQM-1484, and FQM-195). Post-puff respiration measures on smokers of different tar yield cigarettes

    Get PDF
The purpose of this study was to determine the effect of different tar yield cigarette brands on the post-puff inhalation/exhalation depth and duration for established smokers of the brands. The study was conducted with 74 established smokers of 1–17 mg Federal Trade Commission (FTC) tar products. The subjects were participating in a five-day inpatient clinical biomarker study during which time they were allowed to smoke their own brand of cigarette whenever they wished. On two separate days, the subjects' breathing pattern was measured using respiratory inductive plethysmography while they smoked one cigarette. This enabled the measurement of the post-puff inhalation volume, exhalation volume, inhalation duration, and exhalation duration for each subject after each puff on two of their own brand of cigarettes

Halochromic coordination polymers based on a triarylmethane dye for reversible detection of acids

Chromeazurol B (Na2HL) is a pH-sensitive (halochromic) dye based on a hydroxytriarylmethane core and two carboxylate functional groups, which makes it suitable for the synthesis of coordination polymers. Two new coordination polymers [NaZn4(H2O)3(L)3]·3THF·3H2O (1) and [Zn3(H2O)3(μ2- OH2)(μ3-OH)(HL)2(H2L)]·2THF·3H2O (2) incorporating Chromeazurol B linkers have been prepared and characterised. The structure of 1 comprises pentanuclear heterometallic {Zn4Na} nodes linked by six L3– anions to give a layered structure with a honeycomb topology. 2 crystallizes as a double-chain ribbon (ladder) structure with two types of metal node: a mononuclear Zn(II) cation and tetranuclear {Zn(II)}4 cluster. Chromeazurol B anions link each tetranuclear cluster to four individual Zn(II) cations and each Zn(II) cation with four tetranuclear clusters. Both compounds show pH-sensitivity in water solution which can be observed visually, giving the first example of a halochromic coordination polymer. The halochromic properties of 1 towards HCl vapors were systematically investigated. As-synthesized violet-grey 1 reversibly changes color from orange to pink in the presence of vapors of 2M and 7M HCl, respectively. The coordination of the Chromeazurol B anion at each color stage was examined by diffuse reflectance spectroscopy and FT-IR measurements. The remarkable stability of 1 to acid and the observed reversible and reproducible color changes provide a new design for multifunctional sensor materials

Self-assembly has proven to be a widely successful synthetic strategy for functional materials, especially for metal-organic materials (MOMs), an emerging class of porous materials consisting of metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) and metal-organic polyhedra (MOPs). However, there are areas in MOM synthesis in which such self-assembly has not been fully utilized, such as controlling the interior of MOM crystals. Here we demonstrate sequential self-assembly strategy for synthesizing various forms of MOM crystals, including double-shell hollow MOMs, based on single-crystal to single-crystal transformation from MOP to MOF. Moreover, this synthetic strategy also yields other forms, such as solid, core-shell, double and triple matryoshka, and single-shell hollow MOMs, thereby exhibiting form evolution in MOMs. We anticipate that this synthetic approach might open up a new direction for the development of diverse forms in MOMs, with highly advanced areas such as sequential drug delivery/release and heterogeneous cascade catalysis targeted in the foreseeable future.ope

Highly Water-Stable Zirconium Metal-Organic Framework UiO-66 Membranes Supported on Alumina Hollow Fibers for Desalination

    Get PDF
In this study, continuous zirconium(IV)-based metal-organic framework (Zr-MOF) membranes were prepared. The pure-phase Zr-MOF (i.e., UiO-66) polycrystalline membranes were fabricated on alumina hollow fibers using an in situ solvothermal synthesis method. Single-gas permeation and ion rejection tests were carried out to confirm membrane integrity and functionality. The membrane exhibited excellent multivalent ion rejection (e.g., 86.3% for Ca2+, 98.0% for Mg2+, and 99.3% for Al3+) on the basis of size exclusion with moderate permeance (0.14 L m-2 h-1 bar-1) and good permeability (0.28 L m-2 h-1 bar-1 μm). Benefiting from the exceptional chemical stability of the UiO-66 material, no degradation of membrane performance was observed for various tests up to 170 h toward a wide range of saline solutions. The high separation performance combined with its outstanding water stability suggests the developed UiO-66 membrane as a promising candidate for water desalination
